Markham Shkode Prairies – Main Office

The Nature Conservancy’s Markham Shkode Prairies Main Office, headquartered at 3454 West 155th Street in Markham, Illinois, manages a 400-acre preserve spanning five distinct prairie sites. The organization protects and restores native tallgrass prairie habitat—including black soil prairie, sand prairie, and sedge meadow—supporting over 250 native plant species and serving as critical habitat for monarch butterflies, foxes, and migratory birds. Stewarded by The Nature Conservancy and conservation partners for over 55 years, the preserve conducts year-round restoration work through invasive species management, prescribed fire practices, and wetland recreation while offering volunteer opportunities and public engagement programs to connect visitors with this rare and ecologically vital ecosystem.
