About

The Hodag is Rhinelander, Wisconsin’s legendary woodland creature and official symbol that originated from a hoax created by lumber surveyor Eugene Shepard in 1896, when he claimed to have captured a hairy, horned beast made from carved wood and ox hide before admitting the deception. Today, the Hodag has become deeply embedded in the community’s identity, serving as the mascot for Rhinelander High School and inspiring local businesses, festivals, and attractions including a giant fiberglass sculpture outside the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce and an annual Hodag Heritage Festival featuring Hodag-themed celebrations and merchandise.
